This monograph and the previous one touch upon the concept of magnetism. This belief in the power of magnetic energies is commonly propagated across New Age cults, and is often expressed through the promotion of charms, bracelets and rituals which claim to increase levels of magnetism within the human body. Let us put some of these assertions to test and examine the reality behind this mysterious force.

What is Magnetism?

At some point, all of us have witnessed the attractive and repulsive forces exerted by magnetic objects.  This force is generated through the movement of electrically charged particles. Because all objects contain electrons, and all electrons are in constant motion one can surmise that everything has some form of magnetism including human beings. These charges can be either negative or positive, with like charges repelling and opposite charges attracting.

These very forces are responsible for the sensation of touch. When you put your hand on a table, the reason why it doesn’t immediately sink into the empty spaces between the atoms of the table’s surface is because at a subatomic level all the electrons in the glass are pivoting at different frequencies that work to repel the pivoting electrons of your hand. This is exactly the same phenomenon that occurs when two magnets repel each other; the only difference is that magnetic materials exert these forces over a far greater distance.

Magnets are able to exert their fields over a greater distance because all the electrons within these substances are aligned and move in the same direction. So the minute individual forces exerted by one electron are magnified. Thus, when a magnetic material is brought into contact with an oppositely polarized magnetic substance the attraction is far stronger, while the opposite is true when you bring two identically polarized substances together.

 

Increasing Magnetism in the Human Body

Technically if you were able to align your body’s electrons in a similar manner then the magnetic forces of your body would also increase in kind. According to AMORC this alignment can be produced by simply chanting certain vowel sounds on a continuous basis. Despite the fact that modern science has never found any evidence of sound waves enhancing magnetic polarization let’s take this statement at face value and examine the possible effects.

1. If you were able to boost magnetism in your hands through these methods then the simple act of spinning your hand would create an electric current that could cause powerful shocks throughout your body, and actually melt your skin.
2. Similarly, the increase in magnetism throughout your body would be sufficient to trick a compass into identifying you as true North.
3. If you were able to increase your magnetism even to the level of refrigerator magnet, you would be able to exert a sufficient force to make all metal objects in your vicinity turn into deadly projectiles.

If you’re worried about these eventualities then never fear. After you are done with your latest bout of chanting, simply attach a magnetic field sensor (a micro device for detecting and measuring magnetic fields) to either hand and confirm that your newly polarized appendages are still within normal ranges.
