Deprogramming is one of the oldest methods used by loved ones of a cult member to attempt to convince the member to leave the cult method. Deprogramming was the brain child of Ted Patrick, a man without formal training but with keen insight, who found his family members being influenced by a destructive cult. He reasoned that since such cults used hypnosis and behaviour modification to instil beliefs and even a new personality, the same techniques could be used to bring people out of the cult mindset. Accurate in theory, the concept was popular for rescuing people from destructive cults. However, it usually involved forceful abduction and careful supervision of the person in question. This often led to a reinstating of the beliefs inculcated by the cult in the first place, that deprogrammers, usually family members, were evil and against their happiness. This often reinforced the cult doctrine and in many cases, when the deprogramming attempts were unsuccessful, led to worsening of cases. A best case scenario is where the person is free from the mindset of the cult, the deprogramming successful, but retains immense psychological trauma of the deprogramming process. Deprogramming eventually became illegal for anyone over the age of eighteen. Next time, we will look into the next method that became the norm.
