In the winter of 1986, beneath the vibrant skies of Miami, a humbling incident unfolded that would not only challenge my resolve but also profoundly reshape my understanding of endurance and faith.

I was a diligent member of AMORC, navigating life’s relentless trials with unwavering faith in the teachings and the hierarchy that governed my spiritual path. Back then, Ralph M. Lewis was the Imperator, echoing the centuries-old wisdom of AMORC, and Christian Bernard was the Grand Master. I remember their words vividly, reminding me that trials were the golden gates to personal mastery and prosperity, that the tests without questioning our worth would soon bestow upon us the wealth and health we desired.

One particularly trying day epitomized this journey of hardships. After an exhausting day at technical high school and a job as a dishwasher that barely covered my bus fare, I found myself staring into the abyss of hunger. With not a dime to spare for food and the weight of fatigue bearing down upon me, I was forced to face a test of survival. It was there, outside a fast-food restaurant, that I encountered a discarded burger—partially eaten, thrown away, yet a treasure in my desperate circumstance.

As I stood there, reconciling the act of retrieving food from a trash bin with the ideals of dignity and self-respect, I was reminded of the AMORC’s tenet that every challenge was a test of one’s faith and resilience. Despite my inner turmoil, I feigned acceptance of my suffering, holding onto the belief that this was yet another trial on my spiritual path, a moment that demanded endurance for the sake of higher enlightenment.

That moment with the hamburger was not just about satiating a physical hunger—it was a stark illustration of the duality of the human experience, the fine line between deprivation and the pursuit of something greater than oneself. It was a poignant reminder that often, our most profound moments of clarity come from the depths of our struggles.

Today, I reflect on that memory not with bitterness but with the wisdom of hindsight. It stands as a pivotal point in my life’s narrative, a moment that propelled me forward on a journey that would lead to awakening and liberation from the invisible shackles of manipulation.

In sharing this story, I hope to impart the lesson that our darkest times often serve as the crucible for our greatest transformations. To anyone enduring the grip of hardship, know that it is not the suffering that defines us, but the courage we muster to transcend it and the wisdom we gain in its wake.
