Of course anyone who has experience with the Catholic practice of communion will realize the religious significance of bread and wine (substituted in this case with grape juice). While these elements are said to represent the blood and body of Jesus, as a reminder of his sacrifice to the world, you may not know that this practice actually has its roots in older Jewish traditions. During the rituals of Shabbat, wine and bread are consumed in a ritualistic manner to signify the bounty of God brought forth from the earth. In this case, these elements signify the gifts provided to the Israelites after their escape from Egypt. Today, AMORC uses these same elements to bond together its new recruits. Again, these symbols can also be found in Hinduism, Roman paganism and other religious sects.
The point is, that newer faiths will always look to adopt recognizable symbols in their own ritual practices in order to amplify the power and importance of each action. For a new recruit to AMORC, the inherent familiarity of these routines creates a sense of awe and reverence that is automatically associated with group itself. For a cult leader, this a powerful tool to encourage obedience, commitment and devout belief within his flock.
